REVIEW

Nokia is currently the only big player in the Windows Phone ecosystem, with sales of its Lumia devices accounting for over 90 percent of all Windows Phone handsets sold. Nokia has therefore worked hard to release a variety of Windows Phones to suit a multitude of budgets and tastes.

The Nokia Lumia 1320 is the result of the Finnish firm targeting those looking for an affordable large-screen device, with the handset offering an affordable alternative to the Nokia Lumia 1520. It doesn't skimp on specifications, however, with the device boasting a 6in HD screen, support for 4G LTE and the same 3,400mAh battery as its predecessor.

Design

The Nokia Lumia 1320's most noticeable feature is its large size. While it's slim enough at 9.8mm thick, the device measures 164mm tall and 86mm wide, which means it's almost impossible to operate with one hand – not comfortably, at least. It's fairly heavy too, tipping the scales at 220g, leading to wrist ache after using the device for long periods.

Saying that, Nokia has designed the device with a minimal bezel around the screen, so the handset doesn't feel unnecessarily bulky.

Despite its size the Nokia Lumia 1320 is comfortable to hold. The device is built out of a tough, yet soft-to-the-touch plastic, and its rounded edges mean that it doesn't sit too awkwardly in the hand. One downside is that the plastic easily picks up fingerprints and dirt.

Screen

The Nokia Lumia 1320's standout feature is, of course, its 6in display. Unfortunately, this screen doesn't boast the same 1080x1920 resolution found on the Nokia Lumia 1520, with the 6in screen instead having been downgraded to a 720p resolution, giving it a pixel density of 245ppi.

This means on paper the Nokia Lumia 1320's screen isn't anything to write home about. But in actual use, the display wasn't too disappointing. Text looked slightly fuzzy and curves were not as smooth as on the Lumia 1520, but we still found the 6in screen bright enough, and thanks to Nokia's ClearBlack display technology, blacks are deep and colours are vibrant. Viewing angles are also surprisingly good, although we did find the screen quite reflective, so it might not be the best device to use while out and about.

One thing worth pointing out is that the screen on the Nokia Lumia 1320 doesn't have stylus support to compete with the on-screen note-taking features of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
