Apple, Microsoft and BlackBerry sue Google over patent use

A group of companies including Apple, Microsoft and BlackBerry have filed legal proceedings against Google over claims it is abusing patents they jointly acquired as part of a consortium called Rockstar.

The patents were previously owned by the defunct telecoms outfit Nortel and came up for auction in 2011. At the time Apple, Microsoft BlackBerry and Sony teamed up to defeat Google, with a winning bid of $4.5bn for access to its 4,000-strong patent book.

Now, the consortium is suing Google as it claims seven patents within the portfolio are being infringed by the firm relating to its search and advertising keyword technologies.

"Despite losing in its attempt to acquire the patents-in-suit at auction, Google has infringed and continues to infringe," the court filing reads.
