Dell's Latitude E7440 is a high-end ultraportable laptop aimed at the corporate market. Based on Intel's latest Haswell processors and with an optional HD touchscreen to support Windows 8.1, the Latitude is designed to meet the needs of mainstream business users.

Announced last year and available now, the Latitude E7440 is also identified by Dell as the Latitude 14 7000 Series. As the name suggests, it boasts a 14in screen and comes with a choice of Intel's Haswell 4th-generation Core processors with vPro technology.

This generation of Latitude models also boasts new styling, including an aluminium casing, with a soft-touch finish in strategic places such as the lid, underneath which is a tri-metal chassis designed for durability.

The overall first impression is of a stylish, quality product that feels solid and seems built to last, which is backed up by compliance with the MIL-STD-810G standard that Dell claims for the Latitude 7000 series.

Business buyers will be pleased to see that the Latitude E7440 sports a removable battery, and can be configured with security features such as a smartcard reader and fingerprint scanner, and mobile broadband options.

However, it also comes at a price, with our particular model listed on Dell's website at £1,848, while many business laptops of a comparable size and specification can be had for closer to the £1,000 mark. The Latitude was available for a discounted price of £1,238, but this offer was due to expire at the end of April 2014.

Hardware
The review unit Dell delivered for our evaluation was based on a 1.9GHz Intel Core i5-4300U processor, which is a dual-core chip with support for Hyper-Threading and the vPro management and security extensions that are almost standard in a corporate laptop.

This is backed by 4GB of DDR3 memory, with 8GB the maximum, plus a choice of 500GB hard drive or 256GB solid-state drive (SSD) fitted as a PCI Express Mini Card. However, there does not appear to be any easy way for a customer to access either the memory or hard drive to upgrade them, so buyers would be best advised to specify carefully when ordering.
