Fiat Delivers Two-Millionth Car Equipped With Blue&Me

REDMOND, Wash., and TURIN, Italy – Dec. 19, 2011 –– Ubiquitous connectivity. Multimedia content. Productivity applications. Systems integration. Voice control. Many have come to expect these luxuries in their work and home environments, but rarely are they found elsewhere.

Unless, that is, you own a highly sophisticated vehicle such as the iconic and stylish Fiat, including the Fiat 500 that was introduced to the U.S. market in early 2011.
The two-millionth Fiat equipped with Blue&Me was delivered on Dec. 12 to a delighted customer at the Motor Village near Turin. Powered by Windows Embedded Automotive, Blue&Me is a breakthrough communications and infotainment system that integrates mobile phones, digital music players and navigation devices into the audio system and controls of the car, allowing voice control of these devices by the driver.

Jointly developed by Fiat and Microsoft, the award-winning Blue&Me allows drivers to place and receive telephone calls, listen to incoming text messages and play music, without taking their hands off the wheel or their eyes off the road. Bluetooth wireless technology and the industry’s first manufacturer-installed USB interface make it easy to connect personal devices to the Fiat, whether a mobile phone, media player or a simple USB storage device. In addition, Blue&Me can be ordered with a navigation system from TomTom, the leader in satellite navigation in Europe, with some of the most advanced features offered on a portable navigation device.

"We began working with Fiat in 2003 to develop an affordable, updateable, multi-service infotainment system,” says Carmelo Morgano, worldwide sales director for Windows Embedded Automotive at Microsoft. “It was considered as a completely new approach, but Fiat’s recent milestone shows the success of our collaboration and the clear impact Fiat’s infotainment system built on Windows Embedded Automotive continues to have on the industry."

Designed to change and adapt with drivers, Blue&Me is among the first vehicular infotainment systems that allows users to download and install applications. For example, drivers can download Fiat’s eco:Drive application at no cost and learn how to improve their driving style to save fuel and reduce the car’s CO2 emissions. After collecting driving data on a USB memory stick connected to Blue&Me, eco:Drive provides a range of indexes, scores, classifications and recommendations for how to save money and reduce environmental emissions.

"Windows Embedded Automotive platform has enabled Fiat to spend less time thinking about the operating system and more time developing services and capabilities that enhance the in-vehicle experience," Morgano says. "Blue&Me is a truly flexible infotainment system that will adapt to future applications and consumer desires."

Powering some of the industry’s most innovative infotainment devices, across a broad variety of car makers in all regions of the world, Windows Embedded Automotive is a native real-time software platform that enriches in-vehicle experiences. It offers an extensible, innovative platform for a variety of communication, entertainment, navigation and connected services.
